Nevada is a pharmacist and registered nurse with 20 years experience helping patients navigate the healthcare system. After suffering a rare partial spinal cord injury in 2016 from a herniated disc, called cauda equina syndrome, Nevada developed her own healing protocol after discovering there was not a lot of research on her diagnosis due to the rarity of the condition. Her healing protocol was based on 4 Pillars of Recovery: 1. Ketogenic Nutrition 2. Restorative Sleep 3. Functional Fitness and 4. A Quantum Mindset. During her 2 year recovery, as a means to empower herself, Nevada earned her certification as a Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Using a well formulated ketogenic diet, Nevada not only saw the benefits in terms of her neurologic recovery, she was also successful in losing 92 pounds, putting Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) & "pre"-diabetes into remission and taming her life-long issues with allergy & autoimmunity. With the hope of empowering others & furthering the research of the ketogenic diet as a treatment option in spinal cord injury, Nevada began to share her journey on Instagram @thepaleopharmacist where she was able to connect with a community using the ketogenic diet to heal. With a passion to help others return to a life of health & purpose, Nevada went on to earn a NASM accredited Ketogenic Diet/Carnivore Diet Coach certification under the mentorship of pioneers Craig & Maria Emmerich. Nevada has recently been featured in Women's Health Magazine and is a frequent podcast guest, public speaker & presenter at health conferences, online seminars and community workshops.
The ketogenic diet is a high fat, moderate protein, low carbohydrate diet, with a typical macro nutrient ratio of 80/15/5. First invented by Russel Wilder, the ketogenic diet was the standard of care in the treatment of epilepsy until the discovery of the drug Dilantin at which point the diet was phased out and replaced by anticonvulsant medications in the 1930-40's. Evolving nutrition science and advances in medical research over the last 20 years have begun to suggest that the root of many chronic illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease & neurodegenerative conditions have a metabolic and/or autoimmune origin. The ketogenic diet has since evolved into several subsets of macro ratios, which include, LCHF (low carb, high fat), the carnivore diet and a Paleolithic ketogenic diet, to name a few. Nevada accounts for the metabolic flexibility, goals and health of each individual and highly encourages her clients to curate a nutrition and fitness plan that is fun and works within the framework of their lives.
While exercise is not required to be successful on a ketogenic diet to lose weight or improve overall health, it is highly encouraged to find a balance between KETO and a training program that works for your lifestyle and goals. One of the most beautiful aspects of fitness is the abundance of exercises that train the same muscle groups. Nevada believes the key to success is incorporating movement that not only feels good, but corrects muscle imbalances that lead to injury and chronic pain. Fancy expensive gym memberships and equipment are not required as it is possible to train in the privacy of your own home using your body and minimal equipment.
